High Country Astronomy Event 9/17-9/22
We're looking at next spring for our next scheduled get together in the high country. June is typically clear, dry & warm as a precursor to any early monsoon activity starting with more clouds going into July. Downside is that's the time everyone gets out camping, so it can be crowded. May?
We'll be boondocking near North Spring not too far from Greens Peak. No electric or water so bring your own. Closest stores & gas are in Eager/Springerville about 35 minutes away. During the day you can drive up to the top of Greens Peak, go to Sunrise to ride the chairlift to 11,000', and go to Greer for breakfast. Entering FS117C (no signage) will require clearance with rough terrain, picking your path along this 'road', & an eye for knowing where your tires are.
Take 260 out of Show Low, thru Pinetop/Lakeside, thru McNary, & 2.8 miles past the 273 Sunrise/Big Lake turnoff you'll turn left on Fs117 (gravel).
Must go 2.8 miles then turn right on Fs117A. Make no other turns!
In 1 mile turn right on Fs117C. Take care not to miss this hidden road since it is unmarked. If you pass the 1 Mile marker then you just missed it!
Go about 1/3 mile (rough dirt trail) & find camping on the left up near the forest line & cattle gate. Take it slow.

The altitude at this location is 9,200'. Depending on monsoon activity, the high country can be susceptible to rain during the day. It generally clears at night with the dark cold air providing superb views of the night sky with cameras, telescopes, binoculars, & the naked eye (SQM 21.76).
